.

“Mark Twain Project Online applies innovative technology to more than four decades’ worth of archival research by expert editors at the Mark Twain Project. It offers unfettered, intuitive access to reliable texts, accurate and exhaustive notes, and the most recently discovered letters and documents.

.

Its ultimate purpose is to produce a digital critical edition, fully annotated, of everything Mark Twain wrote. MTPO is produced by the Mark Twain Papers and Project of The Bancroft Library in collaboration with the University of California Press; the site is hosted by UC Berkeley’s Library Systems Office. During 20058 the California Digital Library collaborated in MTPO’s creation and initial development.”

About the American Verse Project

.

Humanities Text Initiative American Verse Project

.

The Humanities Text Initiative (HTI) is assembling an electronic archive of volumes of American poetry. Most of the archive is made up of 19th century poetry, although a few 18th century and early 20th century texts are included. The full text of each volume is being converted into digital form and coded in Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML) using the TEI Guidelines.(1) The volumes already online, which include books of poetry by a number of African-American and women poets, represent an interesting selection. In many cases, the texts selected are the only existing editions of the author’s work.

.

The University of Michigan Press is collaborating with HTI in an experimental venture to make these materials available to a wider audience over the Internet. The project has several purposes: first, it allows the Press to explore new ways of providing access to World-Wide Web documents. The HTI provides several levels of access to the American verse texts, and guidelines for use (2) are stated clearly at the beginning of each document. Individuals are allowed to use the texts freely, whether to create new editions, distribute to students, or use as a basis for multimedia products. Institutions such as universities, publishers, or online providers are required to seek permission from the Press and, in some cases, pay a fee, in order to use or distribute the texts.

.

A second goal of the project is to provide a service to scholars by advancing their ability to use Web documents in their work. Currently, the Internet does not have well-established mechanisms for authors seeking to integrate complete texts, or parts of texts, into their scholarship. The TEI Guidelines provide clearly defined ways of linking from one SGML document to portions of another; however, no one has yet set up a Web server to accept this sort of linking. The HTI proposes to explore this as part of the American Verse project. This will allow, for example, someone writing about Dickinson to embed links in his or her electronic text pointing the reader to various poems, stanzas, or lines from volumes that are part of the project without having to replicate the material within his or her own document as is currently the case. The evidence of scholarship would remain in this central archival server, rather than be replicated on a number of different scholars’ machines.

.

The project is designed to reproduce already-published texts without any additional (i.e., modern) critical material. The project is also structured as an archive to which additional volumes of poetry will be added continually. The HTI is responsible for the production of coded texts; the Press’s role includes developing guidelines for access and publicizing the archive through regular and subject catalogs, as well as over the Internet.

Stow

http://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/stow.htm

Introduction

MoEML is thrilled to announce the forthcoming publication of the complete 1598 text of John Stows A Survey of London. Our TEI-encoded diplomatic transcription is based on EEBO-TCPs XML text. Our research team has corrected the transcription, filled in gaps left by EEBO-TCP transcribers, added additional bibliographical encoding, and identified all the toponyms, people, and dates. Follow our progress on the 1598 text here: Stow (1598) Progress Chart. If you are interested in viewing and providing feedback on a preliminary version of our 1598 Survey, the editorial team would be happy to share a link.

We are applying for another SSHRC grant to encode the 1603, 1618, and 1633 editions of Stows Survey. We plan to build a custom comparator tool for these four editions that will allow you to view the extensive additions and deletions from one edition to the next. We will incorporate digital facsimiles of the volumes as well.

Articles on Stow

For now, you can learn more about Stow and his Survey from these student articles:

Biography of John Stow (1525-1605)

A Survey of London and its Revisions

Stow Extracts

Before we began our current project of editing the complete text of Stow, MoEML had transcribed selected passages from A Survey:

Lime Street Ward

Parish Churches

Selected Passages from A Survey of London [the introduction to the ward-by-ward peripatesis]

The Ward Index will take you to transcriptions of the opening section of each ward description, where Stow traces the boundaries of the ward:

About

http://mapoflondon.uvic.ca/about.htm

The Map of Early Modern London is comprised of four distinct, interoperable projects: a digital edition of the 1561 Agas woodcut map of London; an Encyclopedia and Descriptive Gazetteer of London people, places, topics, and terms; a Library of marked-up texts rich in London toponyms; and a versioned edition of John Stows Survey of London.
These four projects draw data from MoEMLs five databases: a Placeography of locations (e.g., streets, sites, playhouses, taverns, churches, wards, and topographical features); a Personography of early modern Londoners, both historical and literary; an Orgography of organizations (e.g., livery companies and other corporations); a Bibliography of primary and secondary sources; and a Glossary of terms relevant to early modern London. All of the files in our databases use a common TEI tagset that enables us to work with primary and secondary texts simultaneously.
The Map allows users to visualize, overlay, combine, and query the information in the MoEML databases that populate the Encyclopedia, Library, and Stow editions.

Article Spotlight: Philip Morris and the Use of Third Parties to Oppose Ingredient Disclosure Regulations

Every few months, we highlight a newly published article/post/report along with a few key industry documents used in the paper as a primary source:

Velicer C, Glantz SA (2015) Hiding in the Shadows: Philip Morris and the Use of Third Parties to Oppose Ingredient Disclosure Regulations. PLoS ONE 10(12): e0142032. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0142032

In 1996 Massachusetts proposed regulations that would require tobacco companies to disclose information about the ingredients in their products. This December 2015 paper examines the strategies employed by Philip Morris to stop these regulations from being implemented. The authors used tobacco documents to demonstrate the tobacco companies’ historical use of third parties to form coalitions to oppose ingredient disclosure regulations and how these coalitions have prevented regulations by creating the appearance of local opposition to the measures.

http://www.johnfoxe.org/

.

.

You can browse and compare the unabridged texts of the four editions of this massive work published in John Foxes lifetime (1563, 1570, 1576, 1583). Each edition changed significantly as Foxe sought to incorporate new material, answer his critics, and adjust its polemical force to the needs of the moment.

.

You can search and view modern transcriptions that keep as close as possible to the original texts.

.

You can identify the individuals and places that are mentioned in the text.

.

You can explore the latest scholarship to understand the sources upon which it was based, and the purposes for which they were deployed.

.

Facsimiles of all the woodcut illustrations in the text can be viewed along with commentaries. Significant passages in Latin and Greek are translated.

.

TAMO is both an instrument of scholarship and a tool for anyone who wants to explore this remarkable work, a milestone in the history of the English printed book and a signal achievement of its printer, John Day.

Contents

http://inslib.kcl.ac.uk/irt2009/toc/index.html

There are several tables of contents to the inscriptions in this collection.

This choice of a number of organisational routes into the material serves to deconstruct the linearity of a traditional book publication. While we have chosen a fundamental structure based on the location of the inscriptions, our choice does not have to be imposed on the user, who may find one of these alternative routes more useful.
