This post explains how to use the U.S. Government agency section of the Statistical Resources Research Guide on the Temple University Libraries website to find source lists of data on specific topics.

In the sample search topic used in this post, I used the domain limited (GOV) Google Web Search in the group of nineteen sesrches for the United States Government Institute of Museum and Library Services and added the phrase cultural tourism on the left side of the search followed by AND and found this result on this Statistics Resources Research Guide.

The Justice Departments efforts to force Apple AAPL +2.35% to help it hack into the iPhone that belonged to one of the San Bernardino shooters may be over, but if recent history is any indication, it wont be long before lawyers for the government are back in front of a judge with a similar request.

.

The American Civil Liberties Union today published details of 63 cases where the government has cited the All Writs Act to force Apple or Google GOOGL +1.67% to help it gain access to data contained on locked smartphones and tablets. The list includes cases involving drugs, identity theft and counterfeiting, among others. The disclosure comes one day after a judge threw out an order to compel Apple to help investigators in the San Bernardino case by writing software to disable a basic security function on the iPhone 5c. The order was vacated after lawyers for the Justice Department told the court Mondaythat they had what they needed from the phone and no longer needed Apples help.

.

We just thought transparency is so important, that we needed to see what these cases were, to see how the arguments evolved. It was unbelievable to us that this issue had been litigated  for the most part  outside of public view, said Matthew Segal, legal director of the ACLU of Massachusetts. For weeks, the group dug up any available information on cases using public databases, as the collective focus of privacy and security researchers, civil liberties groups, Silicon Valley and the media centered on the San Bernardino case.

.

Apple disclosed earlier this month a dozen other cases it was compelled to help with under the All Writs Act. Its unclear how many of those are included in the ACLUs list, since Apple did not release case names or docket numbers. Justice Department lawyers said previously that Apple had helped investigators unlock phones at least 70 times since 2008, prompting the ACLU to gather more information on the cases.

.

snip

.

ACLU attorneys identified the cases by combing through court records with key words and phrases that appeared in previously identified filings. While no two requests made under the All Writs Act are exactly alike, Segal said there were enough similarities among them to come up with search terms to find others.

.

The ACLU also filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the Justice Department in December, seeking additional information on every case involving the All Writs Act. The Justice Department informed ACLU that they were gathering responsive documents, but as of today none have been produced, said Riana Pfefferkorn, a fellow at the Stanford Center for Internet and Society, which joined the ACLU in the request. Pfefferkorn said the San Bernardino case should be an indicator of the governments ability to hack into devices in other instances.

One lesson from this collection of database search results is that PUBMED, as much as medical libraries and medical researchers depend on this database, is not only not the only place to find resources on medical topics, but frequently may not be the best or most productive source. Failure to use a group of databases in research can greatly limit the results found and cause the searcher or researcher to miss many valuable resources on their research topics.

Two people from the same family have died from Ebola in Guinea, the government said Thursday, as the WHO declared a flare-up of the virus in neighbouring Sierra Leone over.

.

Test samples from the two patients “revealed the presence of the Ebola haemorrhagic fever virus”, the government said in a statement, while officials feared further suspected cases.

.

“For now, we have two confirmed cases and three suspected cases,” it added.

.

The cases are the first in Guinea since the country was declared Ebola free at the end of last year, and the UN health agency warned that a recurrence of the tropical disease — which has claimed 11,300 lives since December 2013 — remained a possibility.

.

Two cases of the virus were identified in Sierra Leone in early January, the first cases since November last year.

.

A 22-year-old women died while her aunt survived.

.

WHO declared that flare-up officially over on Thursday after no new cases were seen for 42 days — the length of two Ebola incubation cycles.
The WHO refers to these isolated cases as “flare-ups” but maintains the original “chains of transmission” have been stopped in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

.

“WHO continues to stress that Sierra Leone, as well as Liberia and Guinea, are still at risk of Ebola flare-ups, largely due to virus persistence in some survivors, and must remain on high alert and ready to respond,” it said in a statement.
