CSS Generated Content Module Level 3 (Accessibility Section)

W3C Working Draft, 2 June 2016

Editors: Elika J. Etemad and Dave Cramer.

Leveling Up in CSS

By Jonathan Z. White.

“…There are four things you can do to stay sane while using CSS at
scale: use proper semantics, modularize, adopt a naming convention,
and follow the single responsibility principle…You should be able to
read HTML and CSS like a book. It should tell a story. A story has
characters and relationships between them. More semantic CSS will
ultimately make your code more maintainable…”

Thinking about Page Floats, Figures, Regions and Grids

By Rachel Andrew.

“A few days ago my friend Jen Simmons pointed me to some images

+03: COLOR.

In Plain Sight: Text, Contrast, and Accessibility

By Ryan Frederick.

“Contrast is one of the basic elements of graphic design. It lets us
tell things apart. Yet in UI design, at least for the web, there is a
perpetual temptation to skimp. Things tend towards gray-on-gray.”

https://medium.com/shopify-ux/in-plain-sight-5639c9afb4c6

Colour Contrast – Why Does it Matter?

By Richard Morton.

“Colour contrast between text and background is important on web
pages. It affects some people’s ability to perceive the information
(in other words to be able to receive the information visually)….”

https://accessibility.blog.gov.uk/2016/06/17/ colour-contrast-why-does-it-matter/

Improving UX For Color-Blind Users

+04: DRUPAL.

Building an Accessibility Toolbar with Drupal

By Michelle Williamson.

“In November 2015, a team from Mediacurrent participated in
Knowbility’s accessibility hackathon. One of the features we created
for the site was an accessibility toolbar. We were able to increase
the accessibility of the site immensely with relatively little effort
with this small addition…”

https://www.mediacurrent.com/blog/accessibility-toolbar

+05: EVALUATION & TESTING.

Setting Standards for Usability Testing

By Danny and Patricia Franzreb.

“Many practical user experience projects rely on very loose processes,
which are not explicitly defined. That might be ok for an informal
usability test, but we should have a more reliable approach for larger
UX projects. Just imagine how people would react if the automotive
industry created cars without having repeatable and robust standards
within the industry as a whole! Our digital experiences deserve just
as much attention…”

http://www.uxbooth.com/articles/setting-standards-for-usability-testing/

Why 5 is the Magic Number for UX Usability Testing

By Ellie Martin.

“Given that the probability of a user encountering an error during
testing is 31%, according to Jeff Sauro of MeasuringU, testing just 5
users would turn up 85% of the problems in an interface…31% binomial
probability shows that once you add more than 5 users to a test group,
returns diminish drastically-the more users you add to a test group,
the less you’ll learn.”

.

DATABASE INSTRUCTIONS AND TRAINING :

RESEARCH GUIDES:

Database Vendor System and Database Guides

.

.

This message provides examples of internet based guides to the searching platforms and the database search structure found in the search tools of various databanks (companies that lease or sell access to bibliographic databases).

.

Libraries pay a huge sum of money to purchase databases.  It would make sense to use guides to teach database skills or point students to sources that teach them.  Proquest, for example, provides a number of Libguides that are free on the web and teach some skills and techniques that are promoted for getting the best results from their databases.  In your guides, appropriate Proquest Libguide(s) may be listed under the entries for Proquest databases.   Consider the examples a little ways below of the Proquest Database Guides as well as the links to other tutorials and Guides from search results in Google, Google Scholar, Google Books and Temple Summon Search.

.

Furthermore, since most students, many professors and and administrators as well as other professionals have had no training in bibliographic database searching, it makes sense to include links to places where on can learn the skills of database searching and searching in specific search platforms such as Google, EbscoHost, Ovid and Proquest. One might even start with “What is a Database” as that is kind of basic to the issue of how one searches them.

This is a list of databases that is only useful to your college’s community as the links lead to a login that only your college members have.  One, however, can make this list useful to anyone interested in the topic of the guide.  Simply do a search in each database that could possibly have content in the subject discipline of the guide.  For social work, for example, I used these phrases.

“social work” or “social administration” or “social welfare” or “public assistance”

[Contents ends.]

++ SECTION ONE: New references.

+01: ACCESSIBILITY.

What We Mean When We Talk About Accessibility

By Alistair Duggin.

“…Accessibility means that people can do what they need to do in a
similar amount of time and effort as someone that does not have a
disability. It means that people are empowered, can be independent,
and will not be frustrated by something that is poorly designed or
implemented…”

Research with Blind Users on Mobile Devices

By Ed Horsford.

“…Last year we did some usability research with users with a range
of visual impairments. We found out lots of interesting things, and
one in particular was about the way blind users of touchscreen devices
experience the web…”

We’re Just Temporarily Abled: Designing for the Future

By Jennifer Aldrich.

“We aren’t just designing accessible products and websites for a
subgroup of people who we may or may not know, who have permanent
visual or motor issues. We’re designing these sites and products for
our future selves as well.”

http://uxmag.com/articles/we-re-just-temporarily-abled

Designer’s Guide to the Basics of Web Accessibility Design

By Jake Rocheleau.

“The web should be a place where everyone can access the same content
from anywhere in the world…”

The High Cost of Digital Discrimination: Why Companies Should Care
About Web Accessibility

By Jonathon Hensley.

“Netflix, Disney and Target have all faced lawsuits alleging their
websites offer poor accessibility for the disabled. It makes no sense
to wait for US guidelines, now expected in 2018, to end an era of
digital discrimination…”

+02: CASCADING STYLE SHEETS.

Quick Tip: How Z-index and Auto Margins Work in Flexbox

By George Martsoukos.

“Flexbox is well-known for solving common layout problems such as
sticky footers and equal-height columns. Beyond those capabilities, it
also provides a few other useful features that aren’t so popular.
Let’s explore two of them!..”

+03: EVALUATION & TESTING.

4 Forgotten Principles of Usability Testing

By David Travis.

“…Here are 4 principles of usability testing that have been absent
in many of the tests I’ve observed. 1) Screen for behaviours not
demographics. 2) Test the red routes. 3) Focus on what people do, not
what they say. 4) Don’t ask users to redesign the interface…”

User Testing v/s Usability Testing

By Pratik.

“My dear friend (ahem, I wish) Travis, now Founder and CEO of UBER App
got stuck in a traffic in Paris on a rainy day and couldn’t get a cab.
He took the problem in hand and started going to friends’ / bus stops
/ taxi stand / building exits, asking them if they would like to have
an app which could get them a cab in a click (and how). That’s user
testing…”

Computer Says NO to HTML5 Document Outline

By Steve Faulkner.
“…the HTML 5.1 specification requires developers to use h1-h6 to
convey document structure. The simple reason for this change is that
the HTML5 document outline is not implemented…”

Using the HTML lang Attribute

By Léonie Watson.

“…The HTML lang attribute is used to identify the language of text
content on the web. This information helps search engines return
language specific results, and it is also used by screen readers that
switch language profiles to provide the correct accent and

The Web’s Creator Looks to Reinvent It

By Quentin Hardy.

“…Mr. Berners-Lee and Mr. Kahle and others brainstormed at the
event, called the Decentralized Web Summit, over new ways that web
pages could be distributed broadly without the standard control of a
web server computer, as well as ways of storing scientific data
without having to pay storage fees to companies like Amazon, Dropbox
or Google. Efforts at creating greater amounts of privacy and
accountability, by adding more encryption to various parts of the web
and archiving all versions of a web page, also came up. Such efforts
would make it harder to censor content…’The web is already
decentralized,’ Mr. Berners-Lee said. ‘The problem is the dominance of
one search engine, one big social network, one Twitter for
microblogging. We don’t have a technology problem, we have a social
problem’…”

Do Icons Need Labels?

By Steve McCarthy.

“…For the last few years we involved in digital web/app/product
development have been heavily focused on adaptive and responsive
design, ensuring users have access to content across multiple devices.
We now need to take what this design approach has started, and begin
applying it to the way users orientate and consume content. The first
step is to understand the importance and strength of the Signs we are
creating. Only then can we consider optimising and personalising the
experience. Only then can we start to remove the labels.”

Branding is Bull

By Gerry McGovern.

“…Branding is bull, and that’s a fact. Branding in practice is the
manipulation of human emotion, the targeting of human weaknesses, the
wrapping of the product in an image that has got nothing to do with
the product itself. The gushing, smiling faces of actors pretending to
be customers. Branding is the mark of the establishment. The opposite
of authenticity…”

Computer-Assisted Embarrassment

By Susan Farrell.

“Computer systems shouldn’t make us feel bad. But they often do.
Contextual usability methods can help discover social defects in user
experience.”

Should You Really Reduce Form Fields?

By Shanelle Mullin.

“Reducing form fields to increase conversions isn’t a myth, but it’s
also not an absolute truth. Just because it works often, doesn’t mean
it will work always.”

SVG Masking Examples – Paths, Gradients, And Patterns

By Steven Bradley.

“…I thought I’d walk you through some different examples today and

elements being masked. Hopefully it will give you some ideas for how
you might use masks in your work…”

“The Cornell University Library and the Cornell Daily Sun are collaborating on an
ambitious new digitization project to provide online access to the Sun’s historical files.
All of the original newspapers will be scanned and made available on a web site
maintained by the Cornell University Library.”

“For more than 120 years, the Sun has provided news, information, and entertainment
to the entire Cornell community. Accounts of campus events and activities, sports reporting,
and editorial commentary all contribute to make the Sun one of the most important sources
of information on the history of the university. Written and produced entirely by Cornell
undergraduates, the Sun is also a rich resource for social and cultural historians –
illuminating the perceptions and documenting the concerns of collegiate men and women
from the late 19th-century and through the entire 20th century.

The contents of each issue also will be indexed and a database created so that alumni and
other users will be able to search the entire Sun archive for articles by subject, writer, or date.”

The Lafayette, the oldest college newspaper in Pennsylvania, began publication as
The Lafayette Monthly in September 1870. It served as a combined literary and news magazine,
with more emphasis on the former. The name was changed to The Lafayette Journal in
September 1875 to signal an increased focus on news of the college and the alumni. Its final name,
The Lafayette, was adopted in October of 1884.

The Springfield College Newspaper Collection contains newspapers published by
the college, faculty and staff, and students of the community of Springfield College.

The Williams Record

The Williams College newspaper was renamed from the Williams Weekly when the editors
decided to publish the serial as a semi-weekly; thus the Williams Weekly issues nominally
form vols. 1-17 of the Williams Record. From February, 1970 to February, 1972,
Williams College had two student newspapers, the Williams Record and
the Williams Advocate. The Record merged with the Williams Advocate to form the Record
Advocate in 1972. The paper re-emerged as the Williams Record in 1975.
Digitized Williams Record

A digitized version of the Williams Record is available through the Internet Archive,
covering Mar. 24, 1904 – Feb. 11, 1972 and Sep. 10, 1975 – Jun. 3, 1990. Individual issues
are linked below.
