Digital Rights Management (DRM) Definition FROM Tech Target

“Digital rights management (DRM) is a systematic approach

to copyright protection for digital media. The purpose of DRM

is to prevent unauthorized redistribution of digital media and

restrict the ways consumers can copy content they’ve

purchased. DRM products were developed in response to the

rapid increase in online piracy of commercially marketed material,

which proliferated through the widespread use of peer-to-peer

file exchange programs.”

DRM (Digital Rights Management) Definition FROM Tech Terms

“DRM refers to a collection of systems used to protect the

copyrights of electronic media. These include digital music

and movies, as well as other data that is stored and transferred

digitally. For example, the Apple iTunes Music Store uses a DRM

system to limit the number of computers that songs can be

played on. Each audio file downloaded from the iTunes music

store includes information about the owner of the file and how

many times the file has been transferred. The protected files will

not play on computers that have not been authorized to play

the music.”

Digital Rights Management FROM Wikipedia

“Digital rights management (DRM) is a class of copy protection

technologies[1] that are used by hardware and software

manufacturers, publishers, copyright holders, and individuals with

the intent to control the use of digital content and devices after

sale;[1][2][3] there are, however, many competing definitions.

4] With first-generation DRM software, the intent is to control

copying; with second-generation DRM, the intent is to control

executing, viewing, copying, printing, and altering of works or

devices. The term is also sometimes referred to as copy protection,

copy prevention, and copy control, although the correctness of

doing so is disputed.[5] DRM is a set of access control technologies.

[6][7] In 1998, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) was

passed in the United States to impose criminal penalties on those

who make available technologies whose primary purpose and

function are to circumvent content protection technologies.[8]

The use of digital rights management is not universally accepted.

Some content providers claim that DRM is necessary to fight

copyright infringement and that it can help the copyright holder

maintain artistic control[9] or ensure continued revenue streams.

[10] Proponents argue that digital locks should be considered

necessary to prevent “intellectual property” from being copied

freely, just as physical locks are needed to prevent personal property

from being stolen.[11] Those opposed to DRM contend there is no

evidence that DRM helps prevent copyright infringement, arguing

instead that it serves only to inconvenience legitimate customers,

and that DRM helps big business stifle innovation and competition.

[12] Furthermore, works can become permanently inaccessible if

the DRM scheme changes or if the service is discontinued.[13]

Digital locks placed in accordance with DRM policies can also

restrict users from exercising their legal rights under copyright law,

such as backing up copies of CDs or DVDs, lending materials out

through a library, accessing works in the public domain, or using

copyrighted materials for research and education under the US fair

use laws,[11] and under French law.[14] The Electronic Frontier

Foundation (EFF) and the Free Software Foundation (FSF) consider

the use of DRM systems to be anti-competitive practice.[15][16]”

    ABSTRACT

“A specific digital rights management (DRM) system designed

for digital document protection is presented in some detail.

Following some background information on document

protection, the various technical measures employed by this

DRM system are discussed. These technical measures include

a variety of tamper resistance methods, controlled execution

techniques, encryption, digital watermarking and other

techniques. The discussion of specific security features is

followed by a discussion of several other current and

developing DRM systems and technologies. Comments and

conjectures on the limitations and future directions of the

technology are made throughout.”

Strong Copyright + DRM + Weak Net Neutrality =

Digital Dystopia? Charles W. Bailey Jr.

“Three critical issues-a dramatic expansion of the scope,

duration, and punitive nature of copyright laws; the ability

of Digital Rights Management (DRM) systems to

    lock-down digital content in an unprecedented fashion;

and the erosion of Net neutrality, which ensures that all

Internet traffic is treated equally-are examined in detail

and their potential impact on libraries is assessed. How

legislatures, the courts, and the commercial marketplace

treat these issues will strongly influence the future of

digital information for good or ill.”

Evaluating Sources to Answer a Research Question

You will want your research paper to be respected and credible.
Therefore, after you identify sources relevant to your research,
you need to determine whether they can help answer your research question.

There are four questions to ask when evaluating sources:

  1. How well does the source answer the research question?
  2. Is the information provided by an expert?
  3. Is the source valid?
  4. Is there a variety of sources?

How to Write the Methods Section of a Research Paper. – NCBI

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15447808

The methods section of a research paper provides

the information by which a study’s validity is judged.

Therefore, it requires a clear and precise description

of how an experiment was done, and the rationale for

why specific experimental procedures were chosen.

The methods section should describe what was done

to answer the research question, describe how it was

done, justify the experimental design, and explain how

the results were analyzed. Scientific writing is direct

and orderly. Therefore, the methods section structure

should: describe the materials used in the study, explain

how the materials were prepared for the study, describe

the research protocol, explain how measurements were

made and what calculations were performed, and state

which statistical tests were done to analyze the data.

Once all elements of the methods section are written,

subsequent drafts should focus on how to present those

elements as clearly and logically as possibly.

The description of preparations, measurements, and the

protocol should be organized chronologically. For clarity,

when a large amount of detail must be presented, information

should be presented in sub-sections according to topic.

Material in each section should be organized by topic from

most to least important.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

Amber Huett and David MacMillan

June 2011

UNA Center for Writing Excellence

Evidence Based Practice in nursing focuses on the idea that medical practices ought to be developed and adapted based on an ongoing cycle of evidence, theory, and research. As changes in practice prompt further research, the theories developed from that research serve as evidence to

produce more changes in practice. The implementation of Evidence Based Practice in nursing, also called Systematic Review, requires the review of such research with the intention of targeting and improving inadequate practice.

The systematic review of outside research attempts to make sense of the large body of information available in order to implement change effectively. The available research may be qualitative, quantitative, or evidence based. How can this research be applied on an individual basis to improve patient care?

Evidence Based Practice involves the following six steps:

Assess the need for change

Locate the best evidence

Synthesize evidence

Design the change

Implement and evaluate

Integrate and maintain changes

Abstract Transparency in research methods and results is now widely seen as an imperative if the healthcare and research enterprise is to be truly successful. A patient-centred focus in the conduct of clinical care includes its safety, effectiveness, efficiency, equity, and timeliness. Innovative ways are being developed to understand, disseminate, and rapidly apply the best evidence to care delivery. In this article, we demonstrate the use of simple and appropriate statistics in research reports that should help healthcare providers apply knowledge to practice by making it easier for them to understand clinical medicine.

Abstract The quality of a research paper depends primarily on the quality of the research study it reports. However, there is also much that authors can do to maximise the clarity and usefulness of their papers. Journals’ instructions for authors often focus on the format, style, and length of articles but do not always emphasise the need to clearly explain the work’s science and ethics: so this review reminds researchers that transparency is important too. The research question should be stated clearly, along with an explanation of where it came from and why it is important. The study methods must be reported fully and, where appropriate, in line with an evidence based reporting guideline such as the CONSORT statement for randomised controlled trials. If the study was a trial the paper should state where and when the study was registered and state its registration identifier. Finally, any relevant conflicts of interest should be declared.

EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE

Amber Huett and David MacMillan

June 2011

UNA Center for Writing Excellence

 *

The Myth of the Off-Limits Source

Chelsea blog 2by Chelsea Lee

http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/research/

Proper citation is an important component of any APA Style paper.
However, many readers believe certain sources aren’t allowed in
APA Style, and they write to us looking for a definitive list of what is
off limits. Two of the most common questions are about whether it’s
okay to cite websites and whether sources have to have been
published within a certain time frame to be cited, such as the last
5 or 10 years.

EPC Evidence-Based Reports | Agency for Healthcare Research

http://www.ahrq.gov/research/findings/evidence-based-reports/index.html

Search All EPC Reports

This search provides complete titles of released evidence reports,
comparative effectiveness reviews, technical briefs, Technology
Assessment Program reports, and U.S. Preventive Services Task
Force evidence syntheses.

Overview

Under the Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPC) Program of
the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 5-year contracts
are awarded to institutions in the United States and Canada to
serve as EPCs. The EPCs review all relevant scientific literature on
a wide spectrum of clinical and health services topics to produce
various types of evidence reports. These reports may be used for
informing and developing coverage decisions, quality measures,
educational materials and tools, clinical practice guidelines, and
research agendas. The EPCs also conduct research on methodology
of evidence synthesis.

Participating EPCs

The following list provides contact information and Web sites
where available for the 13 Evidence-based Practice Centers
currently funded by the Agency for Healthcare Research and
Quality.

EPC Topic Nomination and Selection

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) serves
as the science partner with private-sector and public organizations
in their efforts to improve the quality, effectiveness, and
appropriateness of health care delivery in the United States, and to
expedite the translation of evidence-based research findings into
improved health care services. In this context, AHRQ awards task
order contracts to its Evidence-based Practice Centers (EPCs) to
undertake scientific analysis and evidence syntheses on topics of
high priority to its stakeholders, which includes public and private
health care payers, providers, and the health care community in
general.

Resources for Researchers

EPCs produce technical reports on systematic review methodological
topics and other types of evidence synthesis-related reports such as
reports summarizing future research needs for a given topic.
In addition, EPCs, the Scientific Resource Center, and other
AHRQ-funded entities have produced tools and software to aid
researchers.

References for College Papers

“General Principles for References

  • Use the most original source possible.
  • Use the most up-to-date and reliable source available.
  • Your paper is only as good as its weakest source.

.

.

The Following ARE Acceptable References

  • Scholarly Periodicals
  • Scholarly Books
  • Reputable Translations of Foreign Works
  • Student Theses
  • Research Forums or Hotlines on the Internet
  • Internet Periodicals by Reputable Organizations

Most of the information in academia does not flow through books! The real information flow is through periodicals. Even here, acceptability varies. Scientific American is acceptable for most college research papers, but not for a graduate thesis.

Scholarly books serve several purposes:

  • They collect related articles on a subject from scattered sources.
  • They contain specially-written articles contributed by various authorities to summarize the state of research on a subject.
  • They summarize the results of research over a long period of time that would be too lengthy to publish as a periodical article. They can also include details that would be too obscure to merit inclusion in a journal article.

MEDLINE® is the National Library of Medicine®
(NLM®) journal citation database. Started in the 1960s, it now
provides over 21 million references to biomedical and life sciences
journal articles back to 1946. MEDLINE includes citations from
over 5,600 scholarly journals published around the world.

PubMed has been available since 1996. Its over 23 million references
include the MEDLINE database plus the following types of citations:

In-process citations, which provide records for articles before those
records go through quality control and are indexed with MeSH or
converted to out-of-scope status.

Citations to articles that are out-of-scope (e.g., covering plate tectonics
or astrophysics) from certain MEDLINE journals, primarily general
science and general chemistry journals, for which only the life sciences
articles are indexed with MeSH.

“Ahead of Print” citations that precede the article’s final publication
in a MEDLINE indexed journal.

Citations that precede the date that a journal was selected for MEDLINE
indexing (when supplied electronically by the publisher).

Pre-1966 citations that have not yet been updated with current MeSH
and converted to MEDLINE status.

Citations to some additional life sciences journals that submit full text
to PMC® (PubMed Central®) and receive a qualitative review by NLM.

Citations to author manuscripts of articles published by NIH-funded researchers.

Citations for the majority of books available on the NCBI Bookshelf
(a citation for the book and in some cases each chapter of the book).

PubMed citations often include links to the full-text article on the publishers’
Web sites and/or in PMC and the Bookshelf. MEDLINE is the largest subset
of PubMed. You may limit your PubMed search retrieval to MEDLINE
citations by restricting your search to the MeSH controlled vocabulary or by
using the Journal Categories filter called MEDLINE.

Literacy Skills in K-12 and College: Some Thoughts and Some Sources

This post was sent by me to the Digital Divide Network as part of a
discussion of the importance and the techniques for teaching information
literacy skills to students in both K-12 and college levels. I hope some
readers on this list find the comments and sources sited to be useful in
their understanding of and teaching skills about information literacy.

Indeed a search for authors that winds up with OR combined results for
more than one author names in the search is very likely to be useless.
But instead of fighting changes in PUBMED, one can join them, so to
speak by text searching the two names combined with AND instead of OR.
It also helps if one knows the core concept or concepts that they are writing about.

STATISTICS :
RESEARCH GUIDES :
How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical Data Sources
for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and
many researchers. Finding government statistical sources are even more
of a befuddlement. Requests for govenment information, let alone statistics,
have dwindled in recent years in live reference situations. Providing a tool
that shows, agency by agency, where government statistics hide in a group
of links to database search results contributes to statistical literacy and to
information literacy for government statistical sources and to the uses for
government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free,
all of the databases used are. Over fifty government agencies of the
United States federal government are now included and this is a work in
progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States government
agencies do provide statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously
did until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion
group. I have no idea what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and
as the lesson evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying to change
them in regards to using Google Web Search as part of my database searching
research tool.

Fascitis is found in the article title linked to in this post, an either incorrect or
alternative spelling. “Plantar Fasciitis” is the spelling used for most documents
describing this condition, but the first spelling above is also used a substantial
number of times. Therefore it is most productive to search both spellings.
This post also shares a large number of Google Domain Limited Web Searches
that demonstrate some of the ways in which this method of searching Google
can find quality, scholarly and peer reviewed sources.

These comments in a Medlib search prompted the message I composed and
sent in response to this statement:
“Until about a year ago one could search PubMed by full author name and
get reasonably useful results (e.g. Meshobob, Kukalaka [au]), but the search
algorithm was changed so that instead of searching “Meshobob, Kukalaka”
it searches “Meshobob” OR “Kukalaka”, making known author searches
much more problematic. ”

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

“This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright

from the invention of the printing press (c. 1450) to the

Berne Convention (1886) and beyond. The UK Arts and

Humanities Research Council
(AHRC) funded the initial phase (completed in 2008)

focusing on key materials from Renaissance Italy

(Venice, Rome), France, the German speaking countries,

Britain and the United States.

We are now adding materials from other countries.

Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012,

and the Netherlands will follow in 2014.

Using the archive for the first time?

A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones / jurisdictions, a

national editor has taken responsibility for selecting,

sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting

documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial

decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative

history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors’ brief was to limit the selection to

50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and

Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US

(these covering only a shorter period). However, the

editors have sourced many more contextual documents

which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by

an international advisory board.”

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,
chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books because

I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the most

interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful books

on Typography and Printing. I’ve thrown in my favorite books on printing

types and the history of printing, too. I’ve read all these books and I’d be

happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

The Evolution of the Modern Book:
Understanding the Future of the Printed Word
in the Context of Fine Printing Presses and Artists Books
Elisabeth Schyberg
Sound Ideas

From the Abstract:

“In this digital age, it is easy to predict that print is dead and

soon people will be reading nothing but e-books. I wanted to

explore the world of fine printing presses and artists’ books,

where print is still very much alive, to see what this sector

thinks about the future of the physical book. I visited several

fine presses and book artists in Northern California and England,

as well as some libraries with unique examples of these kinds

of books. I read books and articles about the place of the

physical book in today’s society. My initial thought was that

people who are involved in the process of making books that

are works of art will feel very strongly about e-books and the

encroachment of technology into the printed world. However,

I found a much more varied response than I was expecting:

after the press visits and reading relevant literature, there is

no overwhelming outcry against e-books from those who love

the physical book. Rather, some who spend their lives with

books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced

their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books

coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities.”

Google Scholar Access by Link to Web of Science Article Citation Searches

Google Scholar Now Links to WEB OF SCIENCE

This happens automatically on campus at Temple University.
Off campus, to have access to this feature, one CANNOT go
directly to Google Scholar and use it. One must go to
Temple University Library’s list of databases and select

Google Scholar from that list.  It will facilitate matters if on
the same internet browser, one has already logged into a
Temple proprietary database already. Once one has gone to
Google Scholar via the library database list, the
WEB OF SCIENCE link should appear in Google Scholar
search results.

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

“This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright

from the invention of the printing press (c. 1450) to the

Berne Convention (1886) and beyond. The UK Arts and

Humanities Research Council
(AHRC) funded the initial phase (completed in 2008)

focusing on key materials from Renaissance Italy

(Venice, Rome), France, the German speaking countries,

Britain and the United States.

We are now adding materials from other countries.

Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012,

and the Netherlands will follow in 2014.

Using the archive for the first time?

A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones / jurisdictions, a

national editor has taken responsibility for selecting,

sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting

documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial

decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative

history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors’ brief was to limit the selection to

50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and

Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US

(these covering only a shorter period). However, the

editors have sourced many more contextual documents

which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by

an international advisory board.”

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,
chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books because

I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the most

interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful books

on Typography and Printing. I’ve thrown in my favorite books on printing

types and the history of printing, too. I’ve read all these books and I’d be

happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

The Evolution of the Modern Book:
Understanding the Future of the Printed Word
in the Context of Fine Printing Presses and Artists Books
Elisabeth Schyberg
Sound Ideas

From the Abstract:

“In this digital age, it is easy to predict that print is dead and

soon people will be reading nothing but e-books. I wanted to

explore the world of fine printing presses and artists’ books,

where print is still very much alive, to see what this sector

thinks about the future of the physical book. I visited several

fine presses and book artists in Northern California and England,

as well as some libraries with unique examples of these kinds

of books. I read books and articles about the place of the

physical book in today’s society. My initial thought was that

people who are involved in the process of making books that

are works of art will feel very strongly about e-books and the

encroachment of technology into the printed world. However,

I found a much more varied response than I was expecting:

after the press visits and reading relevant literature, there is

no overwhelming outcry against e-books from those who love

the physical book. Rather, some who spend their lives with

books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced

their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books

coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities.”

the same internet browser, one has already logged into a
Temple proprietary database already. Once one has gone to
Google Scholar via the library database list, the

“One of the reasons behind citing sources and compiling a general
bibliography is so that you can prove you have done some valid research to
back up your argument and claims. Readers can refer to a citation in your
bibliography and then go look up the material themselves. When inspired by
your text or your argument, interested researchers can access your
resources. They may wish to double check a claim or interpretation you’ve
made, or they may simply wish to continue researching according to their
interests. But think about it: even though a bibliography provides a list
of research sources of all types that includes publishing information, how
much does that really tell a researcher or reader about the sources
themselves?

http://writingcenter.unc.edu/handouts/annotated-bibliographies/

An annotated bibliography provides specific information about each source
you have used. As a researcher, you have become an expert on your topic:
you have the ability to explain the content of your sources, assess their
usefulness, and share this information with others who may be less
familiar with them.”

How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical

Data Sources for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and many researchers.
Finding government statistical sources are even more of a befuddlement.
Requests for govenment information, let alone statistics, have dwindled in recent years in live
reference situations. Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency, where government
statistics hide in a group of links to database search results contributes to statistical literacy
and to information literacy for government statistical sources and to the uses for government
statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all of the databases
used are. Over fifty government agencies of the United States federal government are now
included and this is a work in progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States
government agencies do provide statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did until
October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group. I have no idea
what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started
joining the students rather than trying to change them in regards to using Google Web Search
as part of my database searching research tool.
