About Us

http://databrarians.org/about-the-blog/

Because this is a collaborative blog, were always looking for your voice, questions, and experiences. Here are some ideas for ways to get involved:

Guest posts. Have something to say or want a link back to your blog? Consider writing a 400-1000 word guest post. Whether your audience is data-shy or advanced data geeks, we love a clear focus, engaging hook, attractive picture, and useful tips or walkthroughs for other data librarians. If you already blog, suggesting a repost can draw attention to your work as well as increase the diversity of voices represented here.

.

Reviews. Got a useful book, course, or resource to recommend? Write up a short review with pros, cons, and takeaways, and help others navigate this growing subfield of librarianship.

.

Learn to blog. If you have an idea for a topic related to data and libraries, well help coach you through your first post.

.

Editor. If you love developing and editing content, consider helping us develop resources by subfield (RDM, data visualization, social sciences data, escience data etc.) or type of need (data librarians at research universities, public data librarians, liberal arts data librarians, data in community colleges)

.

What is databrarians.org?

.

This blog is a still-developing collaborative project to share tips, conversations, and strategies among data librarians and students looking to become data librarians. Our goal is to help each other more effectively bring data resources to our library communities.

in social work education and is ready to assist in all endeavors related to issues of
disability within this field. Finally, the council advocates to include social, political,
and economic matters involving disability and individuals with disabilities in the

What are WCAG Success Criteria?

By David MacDonald.

“This article started with my opinion on the characteristics of
Success Criteria, with significant input from Loretta Guarino Reid and
Gregg Vanderheiden, previous chairs of WCAG 2.0. Since then, the WCAG
Working Group created a WCAG Success Requirements document, which has
general consensus. I’ve updated this article uniformity with those
requirements. Here I hope to provide helpful advice to understanding
them for those trying to write Success Criteria, or understand
them…”

Inclusive Design Tips: Presenting Information in Multiple Ways

don’t rely entirely on the user’s ability to hear. 3.) Ensuring that
references to visual information like color, shape, and position are
presented so that users without sight can still understand…”

Employment and Training Administration. O*NET –
Beyond Information – Intelligence

The Occupational Information Network (O*NET)
is a database of occupational requirements and worker
attributes. It describes occupations in terms of the skills
and knowledge required, how the work is performed,
and typical work settings. It can be used by businesses,
educators, job seekers, human resources professionals,
and the publicly funded Workforce Investment System
to help meet the talent needs of our competitive global
economy. O*NET information helps support the creation
of industry competency models.

The O*NET System:

Promotes business efficiency and talent development
Supports education of the workforce through skills
training and curriculum design for regional economic
development Facilitates career guidance and career
advancement accounts

The O*NET system, using a common language and
terminology to describe occupational requirements,
supersedes the seventy-year-old Dictionary of
Occupational Titles with current information that can
be accessed online or through a variety of public and
private sector career and labor market information
systems. The O*NET system, which has been
significantly upgraded and improved since its
introduction and continues to undergo periodic
enhancements, includes the O*NET database,
O*NET OnLine, and the O*NET Career Exploration
Tools.

O*NET Database

The O*NET database is a comprehensive source of
descriptors, with ratings of importance, level,
relevance or extent, for more than 900 occupations that
are key to our economy. O*NET descriptors include:
skills, abilities, knowledge, tasks, work activities, work
context, experience levels required, job interests, work
values/needs, and work styles. New tools and technology
(T2) data provides information on machines, equipment,
tools, and software that workers may use for optimal
functioning in a high performance workplace.

O*NET OnLine

O*NET OnLine is a web-based viewer that provides easy
public access to O*NET information. Powered by the latest
O*NET database, users have access to new and updated
data unavailable before. Using O*NET OnLine, students,
job seekers and workforce, business, and human resource
professionals can: find occupations to explore, search for
occupations that use designated skills, browse occupations
by high growth industry, identify key In-Demand
occupations, view occupation summaries and details, use
crosswalks from other classification systems such as military
or apprenticeship to find corresponding O*NET occupations,
view related occupations, create and print customized reports
outlining their O*NET search results, and link to other online
information resources.
