Writing a Book Review FROM Purdue Owl. Purdue University. Online Writing Lab

“Book reviews typically evaluate recently-written works. They offer a brief description of the text’s key points and often provide a short appraisal of the strengths and weaknesses of the work.

Readers sometimes confuse book reviews with book reports, but the two are not identical. Book reports commonly describe what happens in a work; their focus is primarily on giving an account of the major plot, characters, and/or main idea of the work. Most often, book reports are a K-12 assignment and range from 250 to 500 words. If you are looking to write a book report, please see the OWL resource, Writing a Book Report.

By contrast, book reviews are most often a college assignment, but they also appear in many professional works: magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. They typically range from 500-750 words, but may be longer or shorter. A book review gives readers a sneak peek at what a book is like, whether or not the reviewer enjoyed it, and details on purchasing the book.”

    Volume:51

    Abstract

“A book review is a form of academic writing that provides a succinct yet critical analysis evaluating the content, style, merit and significance of a book. The reader should gain insight into the strengths and weaknesses of the book, aided by input from the reviewer. The four stages of writing a book review are: introducing the book, outlining its contents, highlighting parts of the book by selecting particular chapters or themes, and giving a detailed evaluation.”

Book review From Wikipedia

A book review is a form of literary criticism in which a book is analyzed based on content, style, and merit.[1] A book review can be a primary source opinion piece, summary review or scholarly review.[2] Books can be reviewed for printed periodicals, magazines and newspapers, as school work, or for book web sites on the Internet. A book review’s length may vary from a single paragraph to a substantial essay. Such a review may evaluate the book on the basis of personal taste. “Reviewers may use the occasion of a book review for a display of learning or to promulgate their own ideas on the topic of a fiction or non-fiction work.”

Writing Book Reviews in Political Science

    Content of a book review:

A book review should answer three questions —

1.) What is the writer of the book trying to communicate?

2.) How clearly and convincingly did the author get his/her message across to the reader?

3.) Was the message worth reading?

    Argument of a book review:

Like all political science papers, book reviews assert a claim — they do more than summarize what the author says. The thesis of your book review will respond to questions 2 and 3 above: Is the argument of the book compelling? Did the author convince you of his point, and how significant is this point?

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on Tuesday officially released USAFacts, a new cache of easily accessible data on the U.S. government.

.

The data accessible on Ballmers new website spans a wide range, including figures on government spending, nationwide arrest rates and the total amount of visas granted in a given year.

.

The data provided on USAFacts is all public, and some of it has been collected by organizations and journalists in the past; however, the website offers a centralized, easily usable source for the public.

.

On the platform, users can access specific data through searches such as arrests in 2014 or browse different subject areas. The database on government finance, for example, is divided up into six sections: revenue, spending, employment, balance sheets, government run businesses, and trust funds and pensions.

The Digital Scriptorium

The Digital Scriptorium is a growing image database of medieval and renaissance manuscripts that unites scattered resources from many institutions into an international tool for teaching and scholarly research. It bridges the gap between a diverse user community and the limited resources of libraries by means of sample imaging and extensive rather than intensive cataloguing.

DATABASE SEARCH RESULTS FROM Google Scholar about Primary Sources on Copyright

Primary Sources on Copyright (1450-1900)

“This is a digital archive of primary sources on copyright from the invention of the printing press (c. 1450) to the Berne Convention (1886) and beyond. The UK Arts and Humanities Research Council
(AHRC) funded the initial phase (completed in 2008) focusing on key materials from Renaissance Italy
(Venice, Rome), France, the German speaking countries, Britain and the United States.

We are now adding materials from other countries. Primary sources from Spain were published in 2012, and the Netherlands will follow in 2014. Using the archive for the first time? A possible starting point is here.

For each of the geographical zones / jurisdictions, a national editor has taken responsibility for selecting, sourcing, transcribing, translating and commenting documents. These include privileges, statutes, judicial decisions, contracts and materials relating to legislative history, but also contemporary letters, essays,
treatises and artefacts.

The national editors brief was to limit the selection to 50 core documents for Germany, France, Britain and Spain, and to 20 core documents for Italy and the US (these covering only a shorter period). However, the editors have sourced many more contextual documents which are fully catalogued, and linked to the core
materials. Document selection has been scrutinised by an international advisory board.”

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

Bibliography of Typography and Printing

This is my personal list of recommended books on Typography and Printing,
chosen to help the student, amateur printer, and the professional graphic

artist learn more about type and design. I have selected these books because I think they are the best books on Typography and Book design, the most interesting books on Printing and Typography, and the most useful books on Typography and Printing. I’ve thrown in my favorite books on printing types and the history of printing, too. I’ve read all these books and I’d be happy to answer questions about them if I can help.

The Evolution of the Modern Book:
Understanding the Future of the Printed Word
in the Context of Fine Printing Presses and Artists Books
Elisabeth Schyberg
Sound Ideas

From the Abstract:

“In this digital age, it is easy to predict that print is dead and soon people will be reading nothing but e-books. I wanted to explore the world of fine printing presses and artists books, where print is still very much alive, to see what this sector thinks about the future of the physical book. I visited several fine presses and book artists in Northern California and England, as well as some libraries with unique examples of these kinds of books. I read books and articles about the place of the physical book in todays society. My initial thought was that people who are involved in the process of making books that are works of art will feel very strongly about e-books and the encroachment of technology into the printed world. However, I found a much more varied response than I was expecting: after the press visits and reading relevant literature, there is no overwhelming outcry against e-books from those who love the physical book. Rather, some who spend their lives with books have realized the benefits of e-books and have embraced their possibilities, while others see fine press books and e-books coexisting side by side indefinitely because of their vast disparities.”
