[Tourism] TOURISM AND TRAVEL : JOURNALS: OPEN ACCESS : LISTS: Selected Open Access Tourism Journals

.

.

.

Subject: Open Access Tourism Journals

Ulrichs Periodical directory online now named Ulrich’s Web Global Serials Directory lists 2,397 results for a search of tourism OR hospitality.  Of these, a link for open access lists 33 titles and those who have access to this database at their college can get more detail regarding these titles.

Of these titles some allowed the word hospital to be part of what was found with a search of hospitality and these titles I have deleted

Here are the titles listed as open access in these fields.

Title

European Journal of Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation

International Journal of Safety and Security in Tourism and Hospitality

Czech Journal of Tourism

Tourism, Leisure and Global Change

Geo Journal of Tourism and Geosites

Geo Journal of Tourism and Geosites

Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism

Polish Journal of Sport and Tourism

Enlightening Tourism

Almatourism

Podium

Journal of Environmental and Tourism Analyses

Journal of Environmental and Tourism Analyses

Czech Journal of Tourism

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

Journal of Indonesian Tourism and Development Studies

Journal of Indonesian Tourism and Development Studies

Revista de Turism

International Journal of Sport Management, Recreation and Tourism

Revista Interamericana de Ambiente y Turismo (Online)

Deturope

Jurnal Master Pariwisata

I just eliminated 10 to 15 titles that were hospital focused, some search protocols are beyond scary, automatic truncation from a word root is one of them, searches on hospital should not include all hospitality and searches on hospitality should not include hospital, just one of many leasons Proquest needs to learn about its search interfaces, Ulrichs being one of them.

========================

I ran this search in Google, yes Google, there are situations where Google is a very important database and it should be used.

“open access” AND (list OR guide OR guides OR directory OR directories) AND (“tourism journals” OR “hospitality journals”)

Some of the sources found will be very useful for other reasons so use these websites if they help you with an information need.  Hopefully some will help find additional open source tourism journals.

If you’re just writing summaries of your sources, the annotations may not
be very long. However, if you are writing an extensive analysis of each
source, you’ll need more space.”

Annotated Bibliographies

“One of the reasons behind citing sources and compiling a general
bibliography is so that you can prove you have done some valid research to
back up your argument and claims. Readers can refer to a citation in your
bibliography and then go look up the material themselves. When inspired by
your text or your argument, interested researchers can access your
resources. They may wish to double check a claim or interpretation you’ve
made, or they may simply wish to continue researching according to their
interests. But think about it: even though a bibliography provides a list
of research sources of all types that includes publishing information, how
much does that really tell a researcher or reader about the sources
themselves?

An annotated bibliography provides specific information about each source
you have used. As a researcher, you have become an expert on your topic:
you have the ability to explain the content of your sources, assess their
usefulness, and share this information with others who may be less
familiar with them.”

What is an annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography or annotated bib is a bibliography (a list of
books or other works) that includes descriptive and evaluative comments
about the sources cited in your paper. These comments are also known as
annotations.
How do I format my annotated bibliography?

An annotated bibliography entry consists of two components: the Citation
and the Annotation.

How to Write an Annotated Bibliography

“Types of annotated bibliographies

There are two major types of annotated bibliographies:

Descriptive or informative
Analytical or critical

Descriptive or informative

A descriptive or informative annotated bibliography describes or
summarizes a source as does an abstract, it describes why the source is
useful for researching a particular topic or question, its distinctive
features. In addition, it describes the author’s main arguments and
conclusions without evaluating what the author says or concludes.

snip

Analytical or critical

An analytical or critical annotation not only summarizes the material, it
analyzes what is being said. It examines the strengths and weaknesses of
what is presented as well as describing the applicability of the author’s
conclusions to the research being conducted.

For most of your annotated bibliographies, however, you will be writing
analytical or critical annotations.”

Google Domain Limited Web Searches

http://tinyurl.com/jgmmwpl

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did until October 2014 when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group.  I have no idea what the post was about, I just noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying to change them in regards to using Google Web Search as part of my database searching research tool.

On another day at the reference desk, somebody wanted to know how to get recent decades of Philadelphia Census Tracts and their data online. Government data questions, being quite rare, I had a bit of a mind freeze.
I could have gone to the online catalog and searched in key word search philadelphia and census tracts and found a link to a web source.  But I recovered quickly and remembered my new government agency finding tool for data.

I went to the content section for the Census Bureau

http://tinyurl.com/p7to6qk

I used edit/find to get to the outsourced census section (a Groups.IO post) link on the government agency web page. The guide section for census.

I selected this link

Google Domain Limited Web Search (GOV) for Statistical Content

http://tinyurl.com/nvdhwf6

Which contains this search

(“census bureau” OR “bureau of the census” OR “bureau of census”) AND (“UNITED STATES” OR US OR “U.S.”) AND (statistics OR statistical OR data OR demography OR demographic OR demographics) AND SITE: GOV

Over 31,000,000 search results of which Google will not show more than 1,000 is useless for most information needs.

I modified this search for my information need, however, by adding the phrase [“philadelphia census tracts” AND] on the LEFT side of the search.

http://tinyurl.com/zwrfveq

This lead to a very manageable result suggested by Google of 318 results

Here are a few of the items found

Do not ignore off topic or general information agencies for Government Agency
statistical sources for a specific subject field or discipline.

This source is also designed for finding statistical data resources to explore for broad
subject discipline searches.  Furthermore keep in mind that a Google Domain limited
search for GOV will find GOV for other countries, states, cities, etc if their census
nomenclature matches our search terms or they site a document with matching census
nomenclature, note the Australian government department link in the examples below.

This message provides examples of internet based guides to the searching platforms and the database search structure found in the search tools of various databanks (companies that lease or sell access to bibliographic databases).

Libraries pay a huge sum of money to purchase databases. It would make sense to use guides to teach database skills or point students to sources that teach them. Proquest, for example, provides a number of Libguides that are free on the web and teach some skills and techniques that are promoted for getting the best results from their databases. In your guides, appropriate Proquest Libguide(s) may be listed under the entries for Proquest databases.

Resources teaching the syntax, structure, and instruction in best practices for searching databases from Google, EbscoHost, Proquest, Ovid and PubMed are included in this Webliography.

Using Google Scholar as part of the credentialing tools employed may find publications not listed in Scopus
or Web of Science as very specific criteria are employed in those two commercial fee based databases that
will cause some publications to not be listed. Also, colleges with restricted library budgets may not be able
to lease expensive databases like Scopus and Web of Science.
